An interesting beetle was found today; one of only three that have been recorded in the Falklands before. The weevil, Aegorhinus vitulus, is a species only previously recorded in Southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. All Falkland records have been within Stanley, suggesting that it was accidentally introduced and there may now be a small population here. It is large (about 2cm long), distinctive and difficult to confuse with our native species. To help us understand more, if you spot one of these strange weevils please note down where and when you found it, what plants it was found on, and if possible take a photograph. Submit your findings via the submit button on the homepage or send them into us at the DoA. Thank you!
